The Good, The Bad & The Impartial from the week three loss to the New York Giants

September 29th, 2009 | by Thomas Gemkow |

Each week, in the days following each Tampa Bay Buccaneers gang, you will be able to read “The good, the bad & the impartial” as part of a running series within the WhatTheBucs.com blog. This week, we discuss the 24-0 loss to New York, the anemic 86 yards of offense, Ward’s big mouth and the beginning of the career back ups era as a starting QB.

The Good:

As you can imagine by looking at the score alone, their is not much good to report about this last weeks game. The Bucs, in a word have been horrible thru the first three games.

There. I said it. They are bad. They are bad like–creamsicle uniform bad.

So, I guess all that can be said for a game where the team registered a TOTAL of 86 yards offensivly, is, no one got hurt.

There, that is my “The Good” for this week. Sorry if I seem jaded or short, but I mean, come on. The Giants are GOOD, but not THAT GOOD.

86 yards of total offense is embarrassing. What is worse, 51 of those yards came from backup quarterback Josh Johnson…but maybe that is a good thing.

It looks like Johnson was able to provide a spark against a good defense, and it earned him the starting job for next week against Washington.

That is all I have to say about “The Good”

The Bad:

The team only registered 5 first downs. 86 yards of total offense. Allowed 24 points. All of those things are bad, but what is the worst to me is–Derrick Ward, our top addition this off season, couldn’t keep his mouth shut this week to his old New York Giants team mates.

Ward taunted the team via text all week about how he was going to run all over them. The end result? Ward carried the ball five times, for two yards. TWO YARDS. I am 5′9″ tall…I could fall forward for just as many yards.

Ward was an embarrassment to the team, and so far this season, has not proved to be worth the money we are paying him.

The Impartial:
I will refer back to Johnson coming in and taking the reigns of the offense and doing more than Byron Leftwich was able to do this game.

It earned Johnson a starting spot.  Leftwich plummeted to third on the depth chart. Leftwich I still think is the best fit as a starter if the team wanted to actually win games. He can win. He has proven that.

Johnson is intriguing because he is exciting, but making him the starter basically says that coach Raheem Morris has thrown in the towel this season.

Just last week, Morris coined Johnson as a “career backup”, yet now he is the starter.

I think you would have to be living under a rock if you think that the Bucs had a snowballs chance in hell at finishing above 6-10 this season, but the move to go to Johnson this early in the season is going to draw fire all season long, simply because Morris told the entire nation last week that he thought Johnson was no better than a back up.

Hm.
